In this article, we are going to know about the ‘Five lessons from Atomic Habits Book’ that can transform and enhance the productivity of your life.

Instead of Goals, Focus on System

You may have come across many people who usually set goals, but only a few become successful. Do you know what is the reason behind this lower success rate?

Let me explain, goals predominantly give direction to what you want to achieve in your life, but this is the system that will give you futuristic results eventually.

Always remember, System is a phenomenon that leads you towards outcome or result.

For Instance: suppose you have some ailment and you go to the doctor for diagnosis, after some test, the doctor advises you to decrease your weight. Now, you have set a goal to lose 10 kg of weight in 3 months. You follow some exercise, and go for a walk but are not able to maintain the regularity.

When you read the atomic habits, the concepts are clearly elucidated. So instead of giving more importance to your goal of losing 10 kg of weight you should make such a system that you can’t skip.

Like exercising everyday and eating healthy food and negating the junk food. And follow this routine for three months. With your daily efforts you will see the transformation. As you have assimilated this system into your habit.

"You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems." – James Clear

The Power of 1% Improvement

You may have heard from many people that if you really want to achieve something phenomenal then it requires massive efforts from your end. But, in reality, tiny and small improvements, when repeated daily, produce extraordinary results.

In the Atomic Habits book, the author says if you improve just 1% every day, you will be 37 times better in a year.

But, in contrast if you decline 1% daily then you will reach zero at the end of the year.

Let me explain through the example so that you can imbue the concept of the power of tiny gains,

Imagine you are saving $100 every day. By this calculation you will accumulate $3000 in a month. But, this becomes $36500, which is a colossal amount. Most of you are totally astonished how this became such a big amount. This is the power of tiny efforts that compound into big rewards.

“Success is the product of daily habits, not once-in-a-lifetime transformations.”

Become What You Want to Be

Instead of concentrating on the results, focus on the kind of person who attains those results.

So, don’t say, “I want to run a marathon.”

Say, “I am a runner.”

This change in perception will help you rather than focussing on results. So, the moment you start believing in yourself (identity), you subconsciouly start taking actions that match it.

For clarity, let us know through the example of the Non smoker mindset.

There are two people who are willing to quit smoking.

One says, “No thanks, I am trying to quit.”

The other one says, “No thanks, I am not a smoker.”

Now assume which is more likely to succeed?

The second person, because he sees himself as a non-smoker. So there is much difference in the mentality of quitting smoking.

“The most effective way to change your habits is to focus on who you wish to become.”

Make Habits Easy, Obvious, and Attractive

Most people tell you that I am not able to maintain the regularity or consistency in their respective lives.

If you are also struggling to build good habits, Then I am going to recommend you three strategies that you can also apply:

  • Make it obvious
  • Make it easy
  • Make it attractive

The 2-Minute Rule

Suppose you want to read more pages of a book, then start by reading just one page everyday. Once you commence or begin, then you will gain momentum to proceed further easily.

“Start with repetition, not perfection.”

Always maintain consistency: Never Break the Chain

You must know the building of habits requires consistency and regular efforts, not perfection. Always remember, if you miss once that is fine but, don't miss twice.

My friend wants to improve his spoken English so he practices everyday and marks on the calendar to motivate himself through the continuous streaks. If he misses once then he tries his best to not miss twice. The purpose of this example is to know that you never have to break the chain.

So, if you want to become successful, then keep going, one small step at a time.

“Don’t stop when you’re tired. Stop when you’re done.”

The Atomic Habits: Final Thoughts

James Clear's Atomic Habits will definitely teach you that success is not about great gestures. It is all about small and tiny, daily improvements. So, you must build systems

Atomic Habits teaches us that success isn’t about grand gestures but about small, daily improvements. Build systems, improve by 1% daily, focus on identity, make habits easy, and stay consistent. Over time, these small habits will create a massive impact on your life.
